Let’s All Stop RUSH-ing to Judgement: In defense of Sluts and Birth Control Everywhere!

So to elaborate further on my post from the other day, In This Situation, I Will Gladly Be Called A Slut…, I wanted to explain my self a little further, rather than just saying bad and mean names at Rush Limbaugh for fun. But before I do: Fat, Stupid, Idiotic, Gross, Weaselly, Oily, Cantankerous, Hypocritical, Bald, Annoying, Closeminded, Asshole, Shithead, Loudmouth, Jackass.

Self-assured Prick!

Well, that was fun! But now on to the real point. And this is actually going to be a tad more serious than what I typically write – think like this weeks episode of New Girl , which Vulture.com dubbed “The One Where Nick Thinks He Has Cancer,” ala Friends.

So for all of my devoted readers out there, you might have noticed that there was a chunk of time in August that I didn’t post. I had just had surgery. And without revealing more unnecessary medical and personal crap than I should on a random blog to the WORLD (Are you there, World? It’s me, SSG!) the surgery I had dealt with the “female region” of the body.

For those of you that are reading this and are men, you might want to stop if you get queasy at the mention of dear old Aunt Flo. But as a women, when Flo comes to town, we have to deal with it. The problem is, there are so many women out there that experience pain due to cysts and/or endometriosis. What are you talking about, SSG? Are you a doctor, SSG? No. But I have played one on TV! (Background acting does too count!) And my dad is one!

But for real, endometriosis is an often painful disorder in which tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus — the endometrium — grows outside your uterus. In endometriosis, displaced endometrial tissue continues to act as it normally would: It thickens, breaks down and bleeds with each menstrual cycle. And because this displaced tissue has no way to exit your body, it becomes trapped. Surrounding tissue can become irritated, eventually developing scar tissue and adhesions — abnormal tissue that binds organs together. So gross and painful, right? Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs or pockets within or on the surface of an ovary. Ovarian cysts are pretty common and most women will have them and never even realize, as they present with no harm or discomfort. Yet, there are the cases of ovarian cysts producing serious symptoms in women, which can lead to chronic pain and could potentially affect ones fertility. In fact, without proper treatment for both of these issues, a woman’s fertility could be majorly at risk.

Now, the funny thing with both of these horribly painful conditions, is the most affective way to treat them is actually with hormonal contraceptives. That is a fancy way of saying birth control. “What?” you might be saying, “How could that be?” Because according to Rush Limbaugh, birth control is for sluts. And if there was actual logic, wouldn’t REAL sluts be more concerned with having sex and being slutty, and other things sluts do…then let’s say, making sure they are healthy, and feel good, and able to have kids down the road when they actually want them?

I am not saying that everyone who uses birth control has these issues, but that shouldn’t matter. We live in a world where so much judgement is passed down upon people even though someone might not have all the facts or even understand what the facts mean. I remember one time when I was a senior in high school. I was having a discussion with a girl who liked to think of herself as very holier than thou (although, she actually was quite slutty). She made a comment that she thought that the people who can’t naturally conceive children without a doctor’s assistance were being told by God that they shouldn’t be parents. Unbeknownst to her, my father is an infertility specialist and me and my siblings were conceived with infertility. She was taken aback, and I hope rethought her position a little.

And just think of it this way. No one is telling Rush Limbaugh that he is … please help me out here…sleazy, gross, old? if he uses Viagra for erectile dysfunction. And while I’m sure he probably does, no one is going to say something if he gets the pills just for fun. Because you know what, that is NOT MY BUSINESS!
